Many women worry about traveling while pregnant, but it’s usually safe as long as you take a few simple precautions.

You may need written permission to fly from your doctor, especially if you’re expecting twins or have medical problems — diabetes, high blood pressure, previous early delivery. The safest period is your second trimester (weeks 14 to 27). Ask for an aisle seat and wear support stocking — to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Your medication must be closely monitored, so beware of countries requiring vaccinations. Malarial areas are also best avoided as mosquitoes are attracted to pregnant women. And although you may love skiing, surfing and scuba diving, don’t risk injuring the baby. Relax instead.

Always travel with a copy of your pregnancy records, If you have any doubts talk to your GP or gynecologist.

The dangers of dodgy local food may make you think twice about traveling to exotic locations. But there’s no need to worry — here are some tips for avoiding the dreaded “Delhi belly.”

Drink plenty of fluids and take time to adjust to the environment — don’t just wolf down whatever is available. If you are not used to spicy food, keep your diet bland for the first couple of days. Meanwhile discover the best places to eat.

Take basic precautions. Boil water and milk before you drink it. Opt for bottled water if you’re suspicious about the source (avoid ice and ice cream for this reason). Only eat fruit that you can peel and steer clear of uncooked food such as salads and chutneys.

Freshly cooked food is the best option. Buffets and anything cooked on the streets usually attract flies. Check that fish has been caught recently and make sure the food you order is “well done,” as this will kill off bacteria.
